Amid U.S. pressure to localize supply chains, Apple has announced it will purchase $500 million worth of rare earth magnets from U.S. rare earth company MP Materials to enhance its domestic supply capabilities for critical components in its devices.
MP Materials will build a new factory in Texas to produce rare earth magnets for Apple products, with raw materials sourced from its processing facility in California. These magnets are primarily used in core modules such as the haptic engine, audio components, and microphones in iPhones.

For years, China has dominated the global rare earth magnet market due to its resource advantages. However, as US-China relations have become strained, particularly after the US imposed tariffs and China subsequently imposed controls on rare earth exports, Western companies have faced the risk of supply disruptions, with some factories even temporarily shutting down.
Although supply has partially resumed, many companies are still seeking diversified supply sources to reduce their reliance on China. Apple's multi-year agreement with MP is seen as a significant step toward strengthening its domestic supply chain. It is reported that Apple will pre-pay $200 million, with MP expected to begin delivering magnets in 2027.
