Rodless cylinders are widely used in industrial automation equipment. Among these, SMC rodless cylinders are extensively employed in precision transmission equipment due to their compact design and stable operation. However, during prolonged use, some rodless cylinders may experience a reduction in magnetic force or even a complete loss of magnetism; this phenomenon is commonly referred to as ‘demagnetisation’.
The rodless cylinder usually uses magnetic rings or magnetic components inside to achieve synchronous motion between the piston and the external slide table through magnetic force. After prolonged operation of the equipment, the magnetic components may be affected by various factors, leading to a decrease in magnetic performance. This may result in abnormal operation of the external slide table, such as decreased load-bearing capacity, asynchronous motion, reduced positioning accuracy, and in severe cases, equipment shutdown. Common reasons include: long-term high-frequency operation, high temperature environmental impact, strong external magnetic field interference, mechanical shock or improper installation.
How can this be rectified?
Generally, there are three methods: reversing the magnetic poles, dismantling and replacing the magnets, or remagnetising.

Magnetic pole opposition is the process of placing two magnets on opposite sides of the cylinder magnetic ring at corresponding positions, creating an interactive magnetic field between the poles and magnetizing them again. This needs to be maintained for a certain period of time to allow the magnetic field to act inside the magnetic material, thereby improving its magnetic properties. It should be noted that the magnetic field strength should not be too high during the recovery process, otherwise it may cause abnormal magnetic properties or affect the normal operation of the equipment.
If the magnet inside the cylinder has severely demagnetized and cannot be restored solely by an external magnetic field, disassembly inspection can be used. After disassembling the rodless cylinder, check the internal magnetic ring. If the magnetic performance decreases significantly, it can be re magnetized or replaced with a new magnetic component directly. This method has a more thorough recovery effect, but it requires professional personnel to operate.
The magnetization method connects direct current through wires to the cylinder, forming a transient electromagnetic field that magnetizes the cylinder and restores its magnetization strength. This method is easy to operate, cost-effective, and has a good recovery effect.
Precautions
When restoring the magnetization of the gas cylinder, do not use heat sources such as lighters or matches to avoid deformation or other accidents.
If the above methods fail to achieve the expected results, it is recommended that you send the gas cylinder to a repair shop for inspection and maintenance.
