Is 1,300 gauss considered a strong magnet?

I just came across a question online where a user asked: If a magnet’s surface is measured with a gauss meter and the reading is 1,300 Gs (gauss), does that mean it’s a strong magnet?

This problem cannot be judged solely based on Gaussian data, but also by considering the material, size, thickness, and actual use of the magnet. Especially for ferrite magnets and neodymium iron boron magnets, even if they are both measured to be 1300Gs, there may be significant differences in their actual magnetic properties.

If it is a regular ferrite magnet, the surface magnetic field measured is 1300Gs, which belongs to the upper middle magnetic field level. Because most ferrites have a surface magnetic field of around 1100 Gauss, 1300 is considered a good level and can have good magnetic attraction ability with appropriate specifications.

Is 1,300 gauss considered a strong magnet?

If it is a neodymium iron boron magnet, many people will think that the value is too low when they see 1300Gs. Because common neodymium iron boron magnets can achieve a magnetic field of three to five thousand Gauss, but there is an easily overlooked issue here, which is the size and thickness of the magnet.

For example, a relatively large but very thin neodymium-iron-boron magnet—even if it’s graded as N35, N38, or N52—might measure only about 1,000 gauss at the center of its surface, but that doesn’t mean its magnetic force is weak.

Therefore, you can’t simply assume that a reading of 1,300 gauss indicates a strong or weak magnet; this value can apply to a variety of materials.
