Can An Unmagnetized Magnet Attract Objects?

I just came across an interesting question. A netizen asked whether an unmagnetized magnet can attract objects. It seems he wants to know if an unmagnetized magnet has attraction force.

Firstly, can an unmagnetized magnet be attracted by other magnets? The answer is yes. Taking neodymium-iron-boron magnets and ferrite magnets as examples, after molding, sintering, or other processing steps in the production process, they still need to be magnetized by a magnetizing device. Although unmagnetized magnets do not form a clear macroscopic magnetic field, they still exhibit the characteristics of corresponding magnetic materials. When it approaches a magnet that has already been magnetized, it will be attracted by the magnetic field.

So, can an unmagnised magnet hold onto items such as iron pieces and nails?

Generally speaking, permanent magnet materials such as neodymium-iron-boron and ferrite, when not magnetised, cannot generate a magnetic field strong enough on their own to hold a piece of iron or a nail in place. This is because, in their unmagnetised state, the magnetic domains within the material are not arranged in a sufficiently uniform pattern, and the overall magnetic field they exhibit is usually very weak. Therefore, unmagnetised magnets can usually be attracted to other objects, but cannot attract them themselves.

It's worth mentioning that not being magnetized does not mean completely lacking magnetism. Some magnets may retain a small amount of magnetism after processing, handling, or exposure to strong magnetic fields, so when measured with a gaussmeter, a certain magnetic field value may still be detected.

That concludes our introduction to the article title. Our company can supply magnets either magnetised or unmagnetised, depending on the customer’s requirements. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any enquiries regarding magnets.
