Tile-shaped magnets, also known as magnetic tiles, segmented magnets or arc-shaped magnets, are a relatively common type of permanent magnet used in electric motors. As they are arc-shaped, their primary magnetisation methods differ from those of standard circular or square magnets. Below is an introduction to the magnetisation methods and magnetic pole distribution of tile-shaped magnets.
Common tile-shaped magnets are primarily magnetised radially, along the thickness, or circumferentially.
In radial magnetisation, the magnetisation direction is always along the radius. The advantage of this method is that the magnetic field distribution in the air gap is uniform, and the magnetic flux density is essentially consistent across all points on the arc surface; it is the most commonly used method in motor applications.
In thickness magnetisation, the magnetisation direction is parallel to the motor’s axis and is mostly used in disc motors (axial flux motors).
Circumferential magnetisation involves orienting the magnetisation direction of the wafer-shaped magnet along the tangent to the arc surface, rather than from the inner arc surface to the outer arc surface, or through the thickness. After magnetisation, the N and S poles form a specific circumferential distribution.

Currently, there are two types of magnetic tiles available on the market: non-magnetic and magnetised. With non-magnetic tiles, customers first assemble the non-magnetic tiles into the housing before magnetising them. The advantage of this approach is that it eliminates issues with magnetic attraction, making the process safe and convenient. Magnetised tiles are more common, as many motor customers do not have dedicated magnetising equipment. The advantage of this approach is that the magnetic properties of each magnetised tile can be tested individually (remanence, coercivity, surface magnetic flux density, etc.), allowing defective products to be weeded out in advance and preventing them from entering the final assembly.
