Magnetic flip-plate level gauges are used in a wide range of equipment, including towers, tanks, vats, spherical vessels and boilers. Whilst their structure may not appear particularly complex, the float inside is actually a crucial component. The float moves up and down with the liquid level, and the magnet inside the float is responsible for ‘transmitting’ this movement to the external magnetic flip-plates, allowing staff to observe changes in the liquid level directly. So, what exactly is the function of the magnet inside the float of a magnetic flip-plate level gauge?
I. Providing the Driving Force for Magnetic Coupling
The magnet installed inside the float essentially acts as a source of magnetic field. As the float moves up and down within the measuring tube, the magnetic field generated by the magnet moves with it. This magnetic field can pass through the non-magnetic tube wall and interact with the external magnetic flip-plate, effectively providing the driving force for the entire liquid level display system via ‘wireless transmission’.
II. Driving the External Magnetic Flaps to Flip
This is the most obvious function of the float’s magnet. When the liquid level rises or falls, the float moves accordingly, and the position of the internal magnet changes. The external flaps also contain small magnets; under the influence of the magnetic field, they flip—for example, from white to red, or from red to white. In this way, changes in the liquid level are directly indicated by the colour of the flaps.

III. Isolating the Measuring Tube from the Display Section
The magnet inside the float also serves a very important function: enabling ‘non-contact transmission’. No mechanical connection is required between the float and the external magnetic flip plates, nor is it necessary to drill holes for transmission components to protrude; the magnetic field alone facilitates signal transmission. This not only reduces the mechanical structure but also helps maintain the seal of the measuring tube, making it particularly suitable for liquid level measurement applications with stringent sealing requirements.
IV. Ensuring Synchronised Level Display
The magnetic strength, dimensions and magnetic field distribution of the float’s magnet all affect the normal operation of the magnetic flip-plate indicator. By designing a suitable magnet, the external flip-plates will flip to the corresponding position as the float moves, ensuring that the red-white boundary line accurately reflects the actual liquid level. If the magnet’s magnetic force is insufficient or the magnetic field distribution is inappropriate, problems such as incomplete flipping of the plates or unsynchronised display may occur.
Therefore, although the magnets inside a magnetic flip-plate level gauge are small in size, their role is by no means insignificant.
