Neodymium Magnets For Wind Turbines

Neodymium-iron-boron magnets used in wind turbines are the core functional material in permanent magnet synchronous generators. Their selection not only affects power generation efficiency but also directly impacts the overall structural design and cost control of the generator. The quantity, shape, and performance parameters of these magnets must be closely aligned with the motor design, making them a typical custom-made product.

In terms of the number of magnets required, the quantity needed for a wind turbine is closely related to the number of pole pairs, the rotor diameter, and the power rating. Generally speaking, small wind turbines may require only a few dozen magnets, while large direct-drive wind turbines can use as many as several hundred.

Regarding the shape of the magnets, wind turbine magnets are primarily arc-shaped (tile-shaped) to conform to the large-diameter rotor structure and ensure uniformity of the air-gap magnetic field. In practical applications, depending on the motor topology, trapezoidal, segmented arc-shaped, or chamfered magnets may also be used to optimize flux distribution and reduce cogging torque.

In terms of performance requirements, neodymium-iron-boron magnets used in wind turbines typically employ high-performance sintered materials, such as grades N38SH, N40UH, and higher. These magnets not only feature a high energy product (BHmax) but also possess a high intrinsic coercivity (Hcj), enabling them to maintain stable magnetic properties in operating environments above 150°C and prevent irreversible demagnetization. Additionally, to withstand harsh environments such as offshore wind power, they must exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, typically achieved through coatings such as nickel plating or epoxy.

The above provides an overview of neodymium magnets used in wind turbines. These magnets have become a critical foundational material for achieving high efficiency and reliability in wind turbines.
