Which type of magnet is suitable for temperatures up to 200℃?

In applications that require high temperature stability, choosing the appropriate magnet material is crucial. Ordinary neodymium iron boron magnets (<80 ℃) cannot meet this requirement. So, how should we choose?

The editor recommends samarium cobalt magnets, high-temperature grade neodymium magnets, and ferrite magnets for you to choose according to your actual situation.

Firstly, we recommend samarium cobalt magnets, which can work normally at 200 degrees Celsius and typically reach 250 ℃ to 350 ℃. Depending on the specific brand, they have good stability and are the most commonly used choice. Their magnetic force is second only to neodymium iron boron, and their magnetic attenuation is very small at high temperatures. They are suitable for applications such as aerospace, defense, high-performance motors, sensors, and high-temperature instruments.

Secondly, neodymium magnets with high temperature resistance are also a choice for many people. By adding heavy rare earth elements (such as dysprosium and terbium), the temperature resistance of neodymium magnets can be improved. It is necessary to choose UH or higher grades, such as EH, which have the advantage of strong magnetic force and are mostly used in high-performance automotive motors, such as new energy vehicle motors. The cost is comparable to samarium cobalt.

Customers who pursue low cost will choose ceramic ferrite. The working temperature of common ferrite magnets can reach 250 ℃, and their magnetic force is weaker than neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt magnets. They are usually used for low-power applications such as high-temperature sensors and micro motors.

Why didn’t you mention AlNiCo magnets? They are not needed because they are suitable for much higher temperatures, typically above 350°C, and are more appropriate for environments requiring temperatures above 350°C.

For applications requiring temperature resistance up to 200°C, samarium-cobalt magnets (SmCo) are the optimal choice, particularly as they maintain excellent magnetic performance even under extreme heat. For cost-sensitive applications, ferrite magnets are undoubtedly the most suitable option.
