How to visually determine the magnet material of magnetic drive pump?

Magnetic drive pump is a device that transmits torque using the magnetic force of permanent magnets. Through magnetic field coupling between the inner and outer magnetic rotors, the rotational power of the motor is transmitted through the air into the pump chamber, completely isolating the power transmission components from the medium. The magnet materials primarily used in commercial applications include rare earth magnets, samarium cobalt, ndfeb, and ferrite magnets. Some users have inquired about visually identifying the specific magnetic steel material used inside.

For engineering procurement personnel who are less familiar with or have limited exposure to magnets, visually identifying magnet materials can be challenging. However, for us magnet manufacturers who handle them regularly, it poses little difficulty. Below are methods for visual identification.

Firstly, we can start with the appearance color and surface condition of the magnetic steel. The most common type of magnetic pump currently is neodymium magnetic steel, which typically has a silver white (nickel plated) surface and appears relatively bright and smooth visually. Ferrite magnetic steel is generally dark gray or black gray in color, with a matte surface and no coating. Samarium cobalt magnetic steel is mostly light gray in color, with a weak metallic feel, and does not require coating.

Based on the visual identification guide above, can you determine what type of magnet material is shown in the image below?

The correct answer is samarium-cobalt. Did you get it right?

It should be noted that color alone cannot be the sole criterion for judgment. In some cases where neodymium iron boron is not coated at high temperatures, the color may be similar to samarium cobalt magnetic steel, or when both samarium cobalt and neodymium iron boron are electroplated with nickel copper nickel or black epoxy, it is also difficult to judge. Therefore, in magnetic pumps, a comprehensive judgment should be made based on temperature resistance, magnetic strength, whether there is a coating, and application conditions.
