It is not easy to process holes in ferrite permanent magnets

Ferrite magnets are widely used in fields such as speakers, micro motors, refrigerator magnets, office magnetic buckles, sensors, etc. due to their low price, strong corrosion resistance, and stable performance. However, have you noticed that they do not have the same high degree of freedom in hole processing as neodymium materials, and there are not as many products with holes as neodymium magnets? Why is this?


Ferrite magnets are brittle and difficult to process

Ferrite is a ceramic magnetic material that is hard and brittle. After sintering and forming, mechanical processing (such as drilling and slotting) is performed, which can easily cause chipping, cracking, or even breakage. Compared with metal magnetic materials such as neodymium iron boron, ferrite is more difficult to process and has a lower yield rate. In addition, due to its non-conductive properties, it cannot be processed directly by electric spark wire cutting and generally requires mold pressing.

Ferrite products are mostly molded, making it difficult to reserve holes

Ferrite magnets are commonly manufactured using dry or wet pressing molds followed by sintering. The positions and sizes of the holes are predetermined by the mold design, and altering these parameters requires significant mold development costs. In contrast, simple shapes such as cubes, discs, and rings are more suitable for mass production.


Since perforated ferrite magnets are difficult to manufacture and expensive, design engineers can select standard ferrite ring magnets and change the size of the holes through plastic injection molding, as shown in the figure below.

If the magnet must have holes, consider neodymium iron boron material, which is easier to process (side holes, offset holes, multiple holes) and has stronger magnetic force.
