Magnets For Magnetic Resistance Rowing Machines

Nowadays, many people no longer prefer going to the gym; instead, they buy their own exercise equipment to use at home. Among these, magnetic rowing machines are particularly popular with young people. Today, we’ll focus on the magnets inside magnetic rowing machines, including their functions, materials, and shapes.

Magnetic resistance rowing machines use the magnetic field energy generated between a magnet and an iron flywheel to create resistance. When the flywheel rotates at high speed, the magnetic field induces an electric current on the flywheel’s surface, thereby generating a force that opposes the flywheel’s rotation. The level of resistance is controlled by the distance between the magnet and the flywheel (the closer they are, the greater the resistance, though they never come into direct contact).

As for magnet materials, most magnetic resistance rowing machines currently on the market use sintered ferrite magnets. This material is low-cost, corrosion-resistant, and resistant to demagnetization, making it ideal for fitness equipment designed for long-term, continuous use.

However, not all rowing machines use ferrite magnets; some also use neodymium-iron-boron magnets. Rowing machines that use neodymium-iron-boron magnets can achieve a wider range of resistance adjustment.

In terms of shape, the most common type is the arc (curved magnet), typically arranged in sets of multiple pieces, such as four. This shape allows for a better fit against the flywheel. In addition to shim magnets, some designs utilize multi-pole magnetic rings, such as 12-pole axial ferrite magnetic rings with large inner bores. These can be paired with Hall sensors to detect the flywheel’s speed and position, enabling features such as automatic resistance adjustment and exercise data collection.

The above provides an overview of the article’s topic. If you require magnets for rowing machines or other fitness equipment, please contact us for samples and quotes.
