Why do many magnet manufacturers not have many sizes in stock?

According to feedback from our colleagues, almost every week we encounter customers from various provinces looking for ready-made magnets. Some need common ferrite magnets, while others need neodymium iron boron magnets. However, in many cases, these customers have inquired with multiple magnet manufacturers but still cannot find what they need, which leads to confusion. Why do magnet manufacturers still have so many magnet specifications that are not available in stock?

In fact, this is a relatively common phenomenon in the industry. Many magnet manufacturers do not stockpile too many spot specifications, mainly for the following three reasons.

Packing ceramic ferrite magnets for export to the United States

Preparing ceramic ferrite magnets for export to the United States

First, there are numerous specifications and models of magnets. The types of magnets (neodymium, ferrite, samarium cobalt, etc.), shapes (circular, square, ring-shaped, irregular), dimensions (diameter, thickness), coatings (nickel-plated, zinc-plated, epoxy, etc.), magnetic pole orientation (axial, radial), magnetic strength ratings (N35, N54), tolerances, and temperature resistance (80°C, 100°C, 120°C, 150°C, etc.) can all be freely combined. Even for neodymium-iron-boron discs alone, there could be thousands or even tens of thousands of different specifications. If all of these were kept in stock, it would result in significant warehouse and financial pressures.

Furthermore, many customer requirements need to be customized to meet the needs of their own products, such as size, magnetic strength, tolerance accuracy (only negative or positive tolerance), special surface processing (slotting, cutting corners, drilling holes), etc. In many cases, customers cannot use your existing inventory.

Finally, there is also the issue of large fluctuations in magnet prices and raw material prices. The prices of rare earth materials such as neodymium-iron-boron and samarium-cobalt fluctuate with the market. If too much inventory is stockpiled, a drop in material prices could result in inventory depreciation and losses. Therefore, magnet manufacturers tend to favor a “order-based production” model.

The above are the three reasons why many magnet manufacturers do not stock too many standard specifications. Typically, magnet manufacturers only stock products for long-term, stable customers. If you need customization, please contact us for a quote.
