Can rare earth neodymium magnets be drilled hole or cut?

First of all, rare earth neodymium magnets can be drilled or cut. All neodymium magnet products are made by cutting and punching holes.

Can I punch or cut the magnet myself?

Strong neodymium magnet can punch holes, but to be experienced by the master, special magnet punching machine, special magnet punching drill, strong magnet can not only play round through holes, but also can play countersunk head empty, tapered holes and so on, but the magnet can not tap thread.

Different types of neodymium magnet products use different processing processes. Our magnet manufacturers usually use bench drilling machine, which is mainly used for drilling (punching), reaming and reaming magnets. Of course, if you want to drill the hole yourself, you can also try drilling with a vibrating diamond wheel drill bit.

Cutting is part of the machining process of magnets. Rare earth magnets can be cut with wire, while common magnets are usually cut with diamond saw blades or wire. Normally, we use a wire cutter or diamond cutting tool to cut the magnet to the desired shape and size after the product has cooled. There are two common methods for cutting NdFeB. The first is to use a diamond tool to cut it into normal slices, and the second is to use a multi-wire cutter to cut it.

First, we need to prepare suitable cutting tools, such as diamond circular saw blades and grinders. After being fixed on the processing platform, the NdFeB specimen is slowly processed by the diamond circular saw blade or grinder, and the cutting depth can be gradually increased until the desired thickness is achieved. Since a lot of heat is generated during cutting, adequate cooling, e.g. by water, is required to prevent the material from being deformed or breaking due to overheating.

Here I will focus on the process and advantages of multi-wire cutting:

Sintered NdFeB multi-wire cutting is a processing method in which the NdFeB material is cut into the desired shape by means of several fine wires. This method usually uses tungsten or diamond wire as the cutting tool, which is stretched tightly and cut through the NdFeB surface. Before multi-wire cutting, thorough preparation is required, including determining the desired shape and size, and selecting the appropriate cutting tool and cutting parameters. It is important to note that cutting NdFeB involves the use of special cutting tools and appropriate safety measures such as protective glasses and breathing masks. In addition, as NdFeB is a fragile material, excessive stresses or shocks need to be avoided during the cutting process to prevent breakage or cracking.

Multiline cutting has the following advantages over other cutting methods:

1. efficiency: multiline cutting allows several lines to be cut simultaneously and is therefore faster than single-line cutting.

2. Precision: thanks to the use of fine cutting lines, multiline cutting allows very precise cut shapes to be achieved, avoiding the errors that can occur with other cutting methods.

3. Cost reduction: Multi-line cutting saves on material and energy costs because the smaller diameter of the cutting line requires relatively little cutting force and energy.

It is important to note that multi-wire cutting requires thorough preparation and operation to ensure safety and accuracy. For example, the cutting tools need to be adequately inspected and maintained prior to multi-wire cutting to ensure the straightness and dimensional consistency of the cut line. At the same time, the right cutting speed and pressure needs to be maintained during the cutting process to avoid errors or line breakage caused by too fast or too slow cutting speeds.

Conclusion;

Neodymium magnets can be drilled or cut, but we do not recommend that individuals do this because it is dangerous. If the magnet has magnetism, it needs to be demagnetized before operation.
