How to choose a small radial side magnetized disc magnet?

Are you finding it difficult to choose the right small round magnets for encoders and sensors? This article will explain the principles behind radial side-magnetisation technology and provide a detailed overview of 3–8 mm round magnets, including their sizes, magnetic strength, suitable applications and purchasing tips.

Small circular magnets with radial side magnetisation refer to magnets in which the direction of magnetisation runs along the diameter of the cylinder (side magnetisation). These magnets are widely used in magnetic encoders, Hall sensors, micro-motors, magnetic switches and other applications.

When selecting this type of magnet, the first step is to determine its dimensions, such as diameter and thickness. For small sensors, diameters ranging from Φ2 to Φ6 mm are most common. For encoders and detection equipment, diameters ranging from Φ4 to Φ10 mm are most common. The dimensions should not be chosen based solely on the available installation space; they must also be selected in accordance with the chip’s recommended dimensions and the required magnetic field strength

Which type of magnet material should I choose?

Currently, sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnets are the two most commonly used options, and most sensor manufacturers’ technical specifications recommend these. In addition, other materials such as injection-moulded neodymium-iron-boron and sintered ferrite are also available, whilst samarium-cobalt magnets are used only in very rare cases.

Which magnetic grade should I choose?

This depends on the product requirements. For standard environments, N35, N38 or N42 are suitable. If a stronger magnetic field is required, N48, N50 or N52 are recommended. For high-temperature environments, choose high-temperature-resistant grades such as SH or UH.
