What is electromagnet? [meaning advantage function classification]

Many customers have come to us and said they want to buy electromagnets, but unfortunately we have not yet started to sell electromagnets. Electromagnets are being used more and more widely. Today Daisy will answer some relevant questions!

What is an electromagnet?

An electromagnet looks something like this

Electromagnets are different from permanent magnets. It is a device that generates electromagnetic power through electricity. A conductive winding that matches its power is wound around the outside of the core. In other words, a coil with an electric current is magnetic like a magnet, which is an electromagnet.

Electromagnet is a device that generates magnetic force through current, which is a non-permanent magnet, so it can also easily start or eliminate its magnetism, which is very suitable for use in large cranes. For example, large cranes use electromagnets to lift abandoned vehicles and then transfer them for placement.

The way it works is that a moving charge creates a magnetic field, so when a current passes through a coil in an electromagnet, the coil behaves like a magnet. When an electric current passes through a wire, it creates a magnetic field around the wire. Using this property, when an electric current is passed through the solenoid, a uniform magnetic field is created within the solenoid. Suppose a ferromagnetic substance is placed in the center of the solenoid, and the iron core is magnetized by the magnetic field of the solenoid. The magnetized core also becomes a magnet, so that the magnetism of the solenoid is greatly enhanced due to the superposition of the two magnetic fields.

In general, the magnetic field generated by the electromagnet is related to the size of the current, the number of turns of the coil and the ferromagnet in the center. In the design of electromagnets, attention will be paid to the distribution of coils and the selection of ferromagnets, and the current size is used to control the magnetic field. Due to the resistance of the coil material, this limits the size of the magnetic field that the electromagnet can produce, but with the discovery and application of superconductors, there will be opportunities to exceed the existing limits.

Classification of electromagnets:

Classification by current:

(1) Direct current electromagnet

(2) Alternating current electromagnet

Classification by use

(1) Traction electromagnets - mainly used to pull mechanical devices, open or close various valves to perform automatic control tasks.

(2) Lifting electromagnet - used as a lifting device to lift steel ingot, steel, iron sand and other ferromagnetic materials.

(3) Brake electromagnet - mainly used for braking the motor to achieve the purpose of accurate parking.

(4) Electromagnetic systems of automatic electrical appliances - such as electromagnetic relays and contactor electromagnetic systems, automatic switch electromagnetic release and operating electromagnets.

(5) Electromagnets for other purposes - such as electromagnetic suction cups for grinding machines and electromagnetic vibrators.

The advantage of electromagnet:

  • The magnetism of the electromagnet can be controlled by the on-off current.

  • The size of the magnetism can be controlled by the strength of the current or the number of turns of the coil; The magnetic magnitude can also be controlled by changing the resistance to control the current size.
  • Its magnetic poles can be controlled by changing the direction of the current.

That is, the strength of magnetism can be changed, the magnetism can be controlled, the direction of the magnetic pole can be changed, and the magnetism can disappear due to the disappearance of the current.

The application of electromagnets:

Electromagnet is an application of magnetic effect of current (electromagnetism), which is closely related to life, and can be widely used in electromagnetic relays, electromagnetic cranes, magnetic levitation trains, electronic door locks, intelligent channel turns, electromagnetic flowmeters, electromagnetic suckers of grinding machines and electromagnetic vibrators.

The above is arranged and provided by daisy according to various types of information, I hope it will be helpful to you!
